When you decrease, you reduce the number of stitches in your pattern. It’s a simple technique that you will encounter quite often in projects like baskets, amigurumi, and many types of clothing.

Single crochet decreases are usually abbreviated with the letters sc dec.

NB!: Please note that this tutorial uses US terms. In the UK, the single crochet goes by the name ‘Double Crochet’ (tr).

  2. Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop. You should now have three loops on your hook.
  3. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on your hook.
  4. You just did your first single crochet decrease!
