The knit stitch, abbreviated with a k, is the most widely used knitting technique out there. And we will guide you through the process step by step right here.

Knit stitch: How to

  1. Insert your right needle into the first stitch on your left needle.
  2. Work the right needle around the yarn.
  3. Pull the newly made yarn loop through the stitch.
  4. Lift the stitch off the left needle.

Don’t give up if the stitches do not slide easily on the needles right away. When you have repeated the motions enough times, your knitting will become more natural and fluid.

That is why it is a good idea to start out making easy projects where you can get a feel for the technique and truly memorize it. You could, e.g., practice the knit stitch by knitting a dishcloth.
